In the early 18th century in France, many companies tried to imitate the beauty of the hard paste porcelain from the Meissen company in Germany, but with little success. In 1752, King Louis the fifteenth wanted the Vincennes company to move to Sevres. The company became the Manufacture Royal in 1756, and began to mark its pieces with the Royal Monogram.

The Sevres Company searched for the finest painters, gilders and chemists to perfect the rich ground colors like pink pompadour and celeste blue, and the delicate gilding for which they were known.  In 1769, Sevres perfected the formula to make hard paste porcelain. Beds of kaolin were found in the area of Limoges, France. Some of these queries of kaolin were bought by the Sevres company, which was one of the secret ingredients of hard paste porcelain. The people who worked for Sevres were sworn to secrecy about their formulas. They were forbidden to work at any other porcelain company. Sevres became one of the finest makers of porcelain. Sevres pieces were coveted by royalty all around the world.
